Is Your Organization Keeping Pace With an Ever-Changing Environment? – NOHVCC

It is an exciting time for NOHVCC. As excellent organizations do, we undertook a deliberate look at our organization to ensure we are continuing to evolve as the world we operate in changes. Things have been going well, but like any quality organization we strive to continue to adjust and improve to ensure that we are as effective as we can be.

You’ve probably heard that organizations that only stick to what they’ve been doing in the past, even if it produces some moderate success, are missing making the most of opportunities in the future. If you maintain the status quo, you are actually going backward relative to the ever-evolving issues, people, and entities you serve.

Over the past year we undertook a formal process to relook and refine our organization. We recognized the importance of continuous improvement. This produced a better understanding of where we were at and where we wanted to go as an organization. The work involved exploring new opportunities – along with some new ideas about improving some of our past approaches – to best achieve our purpose. This led to developing a strategic plan that leads us to best meet the future. Sometimes people think that relooking an organization equates to a shake-up. No, that is seldom the case. For us, it was a measured and deliberate process that led to some well-reasoned refinements that will serve everyone well going forward.

Our new strategic plan is complete. As part of our work, we refined our governance processes as well. Incorporating material from the strategic plan and governance review led to some changes in our operations that are now being captured in an update to our organizational documents. That update will soon be completed as well.

When we say “completed” . . . no, these documents are not headed for being stored on a shelf somewhere. Our working plans require a regular review and evaluation of our progress that leads to subsequent changes and updates. We need to take advantage of our progress and new opportunities as we go forward.

Why are we sharing this with you? Many entities have not changed their practices or setup in years. It might be time for some other organizations to take a good look at themselves to see if there aren’t some opportunities to become even more effective. It will be well worth the time and effort.

As you might imagine, it is uplifting for any organization to undertake a fresh look at things and to develop some excellent initiatives for the future. We all want to do all we can to contribute to a positive future for OHV recreation.
