NOHVCC and Nevada BLM Complete Key Phase of the North Reno Recreation Area Project in 2025
The Nevada Off-Highway Vehicle Commission (NOHVCC) and the Carson City District Bureau of Land Management (BLM) successfully completed a major phase of improvements at the North Reno Recreation Area (Moon Rocks) in 2025, continuing their strong partnership to enhance recreation opportunities, safety, and site management.
OHV Administration Area & Helicopter Pad Improvements
NOHVCC and BLM worked collaboratively to improve the OHV Administration Area and Helicopter Pad at Moon Rocks. NOHVCC contributed $25,000 in road base material, while the Carson City District BLM utilized agency equipment—including a backhoe and road grader—to spread, level, and compact 160 tons of road base.
Project photos document dump trucks delivering material, BLM staff operating heavy equipment, and the fully completed area.
Moon Rocks Staging Area Safety Enhancements
To improve public safety and protect visitors, NOHVCC provided $10,000 in boulders to help separate the rock crawling area from the staging area. These barriers play a critical role in enhancing human health and safety by clearly defining use areas and reducing potential conflicts.
Administrative Area Support for Friends of Moon Rocks
NOHVCC also provided $10,000 for a storage container in the Moon Rocks Administrative Area. This container will allow Friends of Moon Rocks to securely store tools, build signage, and support the installation of kiosks and informational materials—strengthening volunteer capacity and long-term site stewardship.
New Signage for Rock Crawling and Single-Track Trails
To improve navigation, education, and responsible recreation, NOHVCC contributed $10,000 toward the development and installation of new signage for the Moon Rocks rock crawling area and single-track trail system. Friends of Moon Rocks led the sign development and installation, ensuring clear, durable, and user-friendly information for visitors.
Together, NOHVCC, the Carson City District BLM, and Friends of Moon Rocks continue to demonstrate how collaboration and shared investment can enhance access, safety, and sustainability at one of northern Nevada’s most popular OHV recreation destinations.
