Great Trails Workshop Successfully Completed at Doe Mountain Recreation Area

Thanks to generous funding from the Right Rider Access Fund, the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) proudly hosted a successful Great Trails Workshop at the renowned Doe Mountain Recreation Area in Tennessee this past May.

The three-day workshop was led by trail expert Kim Frederick of Chinook Associates, who brought decades of trail design, construction, and maintenance experience to participants representing state agencies, local organizations, trail volunteers, and OHV clubs. Through NOHVCC’s nationally recognized Great Trails curriculum, attendees received hands-on instruction focused on creating sustainable, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible trail systems.

Nestled in the heart of Johnson County, Doe Mountain Recreation Area encompasses more than 8,600 acres of scenic mountain terrain and diverse recreational opportunities. Known as a premier destination for off-highway vehicle recreation, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and outdoor adventure, Doe Mountain provided the ideal setting for both classroom discussion and field-based learning.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored a wide range of trail management topics, including:

  • Trail planning and sustainable design principles
  • Proper trail maintenance techniques and common maintenance mistakes
  • Erosion identification and mitigation strategies
  • The “Four E’s” of Great Trails: Engineering, Education, Enforcement, and Evaluation

In addition to classroom instruction, attendees participated in extensive field exercises where they applied hands-on techniques, evaluated trail conditions, and mapped and flagged potential future trail alignments for further consideration and development.

Charles Ridlehuber, Executive Director of the Doe Mountain Recreation Authority, expressed enthusiasm about continuing the partnership and hopes to host another Great Trails Workshop this fall with expanded participation and additional advanced training opportunities.

NOHVCC extends its sincere appreciation to the Right Rider Access Fund, Doe Mountain Recreation Authority, and all participants who contributed to making this workshop a tremendous success. Events like these continue to strengthen trail stewardship efforts while advancing education and collaboration within the OHV community.
