The Sound
Advice document
Sound Advice is the product of a
two-year effort by the Motorcycle Sound
Working Group, which was formed in 2003,
and included representatives of the
street and off-road riding communities,
as well as motorcycle manufacturers,
aftermarket companies, event organizers,
and representatives from law
enforcement, municipal government,
research institutions and regulatory
agencies.
The document was released following the
second National
Summit on Motorcycle Sound.

Information on
purchasing sound testing equipment
To perform sound testing in the field
you will need a tachometer, sound meter,
and RPM data sheets. The tachometer that most folks use is a
vibrating reed tachometer available for
about $25. The actual brand of the tach
is Treysit but it is sold by both Briggs
and Stratton and Tecumseh for testing
small engines. You may be able to order
them through small engine repair shops.
The NOHVCC has ordered them from
www.machovec.com
Here's a direct link to the tachometer
on their site;
http://www.machovec.com/quest/vibratach.htm
This is probably the easiest source to
buy from.
As for sound meters, we've
found that the cheap units from
companies like Radio Shack are very
inaccurate and not worth the effort or expense.
For a more high-quality unit, we've been
happy with the
Quest sound meters.
Machovec also provides Quest sound meter and tachometer packages for a competitive cost. If you are
looking for a good quality meter to use
for educational purposes check out the Intercomp
sound meter at:

You can get RPM data sheets from the MIC
