Triva Question

In 1993 when the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) began, what western state U.S. Senator was behind the bill that created it? Bonus question; Where do the funds for the RTP come from and what land-use advocacy organization played a major role in the creation of the bill?

(see answer below)

NOHVCC state Representatives Steve Gunderson (CO) and Ernie Lombard (ID) had the opportunity to participate in one of the most legendary trail rides in the country this past summer when they took on the Colorado 500. Steve leads the way in the picture above while Ernie got an award for being the Oldest Rookie (66) to finish the event! (note to anyone in our NOHVCC network- send me some pics of your favorite rides for inclusion here in the newsletter!- Ed.)

Triva Answer

It was Idaho's Senator Steve Symms, working closely with the BlueRibbon Coalition's Clark Collins, who introduced the legislation that implemented the national Recreational Trails Program that has benefited OHV recreation so much in the years since. The funding comes from the estimated gas taxes that OHV users pay every year to run their vehicles.
