One of the keys to keeping trails and riding OHV recreation areas open, as well as getting new ones developed, is to encourage all riders and drivers to be on their best behavior during rides when recreating. Things like being courteous to other trail users, keeping their machines quiet, wearing all the proper safety gear, and staying on the trails goes a long way in helping to portray off-highway vehicle recreation as a legitimate and healthy family-oriented family and social activity.

One of the primary goals of the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) is to help ensure that there are plenty of riding opportunities available for future generations. To achieve that goal we have developed a unique interactive educational program for youngsters and their parents regarding the safe and responsible operation of an off-highway vehicle.

Ten Primary Messages
The NOHVCC’s Adventure Trail addresses ten primary messages in large, colorful panels that border the “trail” inside the NOHVCC truck that travels to OHV events throughout the country. Each panel portrays a specific message in humorous drawings that feature spectacular scenery and lots of wildlife. As the kids (along with their parents who may learn a thing or two as well!) go through the trail, they work on a fun 10-question quiz. In addition, the participants may receive an Adventure Trail activity book, an Adventure Trail CD-ROM, and a cool NOHVCC temporary tattoo when they’re done. The Adventure Trail activity book is a high-quality, 20-page publication that features all ten messages with an OHV storyline, puzzles, games, and coloring pages.

To get our message out to even more folks, a newly developed Adventure Trail poster series is now available to any OHV group, dealer, or land management organization that wishes to utilize it at their events or dealerships. The ten 2-foot by 3-foot posters are easy to display and are a great compliment to any event as well as helping to ensure a positive future for OHV recreation. The Adventure Trail activity books and CD-ROM are also available to OHV organizations and dealers as free handouts at their events and businesses. NOHVCC also offers a Public Service Announcement (PSA) CD with each one of the ten messages featured in separate files. These can be used by both print and electronic publications.

Many Uses
The posters can be utilized in many different ways. Some organizations have laminated the posters and attached them to a flip board for presentations. Others, such as OHV dealers and land management offices, simply hang them on the wall, either all at once or one-at-a-time on a rotating basis. Still other organizations have fabricated “mini” Adventure Trails within enclosed trailers or other outdoor exhibits. For more specific information on how to utilize the poster series, contact NOHVCC.

Newsletter and magazine editors can also use the Adventure Trail Public Service Announcements creatively by publishing one-at-a-time in an on-going series for maximum effect. Banner ads featuring the Adventure Trail will soon be available for web pages.

Along with the posters, the Adventure Trail Kit includes a couple copies of the Adventure Trail activity book, an Adventure Trail CD-ROM, a collage poster of all ten messages, reproducible copies of the quizzes, and some samples of the NOHVCC ATV and dirt bike temporary tattoos. Additional activity books, CD-ROMs, collage posters, and tattoos can be obtained from NOHVCC for the cost of shipping.
